Mexico City (January 20, 2025) – Village Capital, in partnership with Posner Foundation of Pittsburgh, is launching a call for applications for the Reshaping Food Systems LatAm accelerator program. The program's third iteration will support ten startups across Latin America to reduce food waste and enhance food security. It will focus on startups that empower consumers, improve food center efficiency, and address food loss in regional production and distribution.
Globally, one-third of all food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted each year, amounting to USD 940 billion. This creates economic loss for farmers and raises consumer prices, heightening food insecurity for vulnerable groups.
In Latin America – where almost a quarter of the world’s meat supply is produced – 60.6% of the region’s population experienced moderate or severe food insecurity in 2022. Infrastructure and logistics inefficiency contribute to an average of 223 kg of food waste per person annually. As Latin America plays a crucial role in global food production, urgent action is needed to address these challenges, improve food systems, and reduce waste to ensure a more sustainable future.
Applications close on March 14. Full details and eligibility criteria can be found here.
We’re seeking startups that:
From May to October 2025, the ten selected startups will work closely with industry experts, investors, and ecosystem partners in two online workshops and one in-person summit. They will also have access to a period of technical assistance that will provide resources, such as paid consultants. A founder/C-suite member of each selected startup will travel with all expenses included to Mexico City to interact with one of the biggest ecosystems of the region.
All the startups that complete the program will receive USD 4K each from Posner Foundation of Pittsburgh to further scale their solutions. All startups that apply to the program will be invited to join Abaca, Village Capital’s free web app. Abaca includes Capital Explorer, which equips entrepreneurs to make strategic fundraising decisions that align with their mission and vision and identify relevant resources and capital providers. Abaca also helps entrepreneurs on a venture path to assess their investment readiness using a consistent set of Venture Investment Levels (1-9) and then plan and track progress toward their next level with the Milestone Planner.
